Diabetes is a major health concern in the Pacific and worldwide. PHRI has several projects that focus on this disease.

Hawaii Diabetes Data Network

This multi-institutional collaboration is developing a statewide database on diabetes utilizing clinical and administrative data from third party payers (HMO and fee-for-service plans). The study is used to estimate the prevalence of diabetes in Hawaii and its association with health outcomes as well as quality of care for persons with diabetes.

Translational Research Centers for Diabetes Control Within Managed Care Settings (TRIAD I & II)

PHRI is one of six centers nationwide collaborating to investigate processes within managed care settings in order to improve quality, cost of care, and other outcomes for patients with diabetes.

SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth 2, Hawaii Center

SEARCH is a population-based research study aimed at assessing the incidence and secular trends of diabetes in youth, enhancing our knowledge of the natural history of diabetes and its complications in children. This study seeks to improve healthcare utilization, the processes of care, and quality of life of youth with diabetes. The study will also develop and validate classification schemes of diabetes in youth suitable for public health surveillance.
